Statement on the Protection of Children in Armed Conflicts European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA)
As healthcare professionals dedicated to the wellbeing and safety of children, the European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA) is deeply alarmed by the escalating humanitarian crises affecting children in regions such as Gaza, Ukraine, South Sudan, and Myanmar.
Too many young lives are being shattered – children are killed, maimed, displaced, and deprived of essential nutrition, medical and surgical care as hospitals, schools, and other critical civil infrastructure become targets.
We categorically condemn all acts of violence against children, including attacks on healthcare facilities, barriers to humanitarian aid, and targeting of civilians. Such aggression is not only a clear violation of international humanitarian law – it is a fundamental moral failure that demands urgent response.
Hospitals, clinics, and operating theatres must remain sanctuaries – safe spaces where vulnerable children can receive care without fear. As paediatric surgeons, we witness the devastating toll of conflict, both physical and psychological, and call on all parties to uphold their obligations under the Geneva Conventions.
We stand in solidarity with paediatric colleagues delivering care in the most perilous of circumstances. Their courage and commitment must be supported through immediate and sustained international action.
We urge governments, international organizations, and civil society to:
• Ensure the safety and neutrality of medical personnel and facilities in all conflict zones
• Enable rapid and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian and medical relief to affected regions.
• Hold perpetrators of crimes against children accountable under international legal frameworks
• Work toward a robust, global binding framework to prevent and address atrocities against
children
Every child, no matter their nationality or circumstances, has an inherent right to health, safety, and hope. Our collective humanity is tested and defined by how fiercely we protect them.
